When a Caracara Checks You Out

It’s not often that we get really close views of a raptor but on the slopes of Pichincha curiosity got the better of this guy. He’s a Carunculated Caracara (Phalcohoenus carunculatus) and I think he got wind of our beef empanadas.

Caracaras generally hunt for their meals but are known scavengers, especially the younger ones. Did you ever know a teen to pass up an easy meal? Of course, we didn’t feed him but I’m sure plenty of other hikers have but we wish they wouldn’t. Wild animals, birds included, should not eat human food.

This guy came by twice to check us out and provided an excellent opportunity to get some great shots.
